Etymology
Named in honor of the Austrian botanist Franz Buxbaum, a pioneer in cactus morphology.
Description
Neobuxbaumia consists of massive columnar cacti that are among the tallest in the world (up to 15-20 meters).
- Stems: Usually solitary and straight, branching only occasionally with age. They have numerous, very narrow ribs.
- Flowers: Nocturnal or diurnal, small to medium-sized, often pinkish or white. They appear along the ribs near the top.
- Fruits: Globose, fleshy, and often covered with small scales and spines that fall off when ripe.
Distribution
- Mexico: Primarily in the states of Puebla, Oaxaca, and Guerrero.
