Description
Acanthocalycium klimpelianum is a small cactus species, typically growing solitary, with globose to slightly flattened stems. The epidermis is green to dark green.
The ribs are low and divided into tubercle-like segments. Areoles are small and bear short radial spines and a few central spines. Spines are thin, straight, and pale, often whitish to light brown.
Flowers are relatively large compared to the plant body, funnel-shaped, typically white to pale pink. They arise near the apex and have a floral tube bearing scales with fine spines, hairs, and bristles.
Fruits are small, spherical, dry, and dehiscent. Seeds are small, dark, and papillose.
Distribution
- Argentina – Córdoba, San Luis
Taxonomy
According to Joël Lodé, this species is recognized within the genus Acanthocalycium.
Synonyms
- Acanthocalycium klimpeliana
- Acanthocalycium peitscherianum
- Echinopsis klimpeliana
- Echinopsis peitscheriana
- Lobivia klimpeliana
Notes
- A relatively localized species with limited distribution.
- Shows moderate variation in spine density and rib structure.
- Includes taxa later unified under Acanthocalycium klimpelianum.
Cultivation
- prefers well-draining mineral substrate
- requires bright light to full sun
- moderate watering during active growth
- keep dry and cool in winter
