Etymology
Named in honor of Dr. William Louis Abbott, an American naturalist and collector.
Description
Neoabbottia is a large, tree-like cactus that can reach up to 10 meters in height.
- Stems: Heavily branched, forming a massive crown. The branches are thin and green.
- Cephalium: This is the key feature – the flowers emerge from specialized, felt-like areas (pseudocephaliums) located at the tips of the branches.
- Flowers: Small, nocturnal, and tubular, typically greenish-white.
Distribution
- Caribbean: Endemic to Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti).
