Description

Maihuenia patagonica is a low-growing, cushion-forming cactus species with densely branched, compact stems. The segments are small, cylindrical to clavate, and closely packed, forming tight mats.

Leaves are persistent, small, and fleshy, a characteristic feature of the genus. Areoles bear short spines, typically stiff and whitish to yellowish.

Flowers are relatively large compared to the plant body, usually white to pale yellow, and appear near the tips of the segments. Fruits are fleshy and contain relatively large seeds.
