Description

Arthrocereus glaziovii is a slender, columnar cactus species native to Brazil. Plants are usually solitary or weakly branching from the base, forming small clumps with age.

Stems are cylindrical, green to bluish-green, relatively thin, with low and inconspicuous ribs. Areoles are small and closely spaced, bearing numerous fine, bristle-like radial spines. Central spines are usually absent or very reduced.

Flowers are nocturnal, subapical, and tubular to funnel-shaped, typically white to pale pink. The floral tube is elongated and bears scales with hairs and bristles. Fruits are spherical, indehiscent, and retain dried floral remains.

Distribution

  • Brazil – Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso

Occurs in dry savannas and rocky habitats, often on well-drained, mineral-rich soils, including ferruginous substrates. Typically found at elevations between 450 and 1500 m.

Taxonomy

According to Joël Lodé, this species is placed in the genus Arthrocereus.

Following a proposal by N. Taylor, Arthrocereus glaziovii was designated as the neotype of the genus to stabilize its taxonomic application.

📚 Taxonomy note: Taxonomic placement follows the system of Joël Lodé (2015–2019).

Synonyms

The following name has been historically applied to this species:

Notes

  • Serves as the nomenclatural type (neotype) of the genus Arthrocereus.
  • Differs from related genera such as Echinopsis by its slender habit and indehiscent fruits.
  • Adapted to nutrient-poor, rocky environments typical of Brazilian savannas.

Cultivation

This species requires careful cultivation:

  • very well-draining mineral substrate
  • bright light, but protection from extreme midday heat
  • moderate watering during active growth
  • keep dry in winter; sensitive to excess moisture
